Kitchen canopy fire suppression
Fat and oil fires start fast and spread into canopies and ductwork. A canopy fire suppression system detects a fire and discharges automatically over the appliances, plenum and duct. We design it into the canopy with our partner, Marlowe Kitchen Fire Suppression.
Detect, shut off, suppress
Detectors in the canopy sense a fire and trigger the system. A wet chemical agent is discharged through nozzles aimed at the appliances, the canopy plenum and the duct entry, and the gas supply is shut off at the same time. The agent knocks down the flames and forms a layer on burning oil that stops it reigniting.
Because the pipework and nozzles have to suit the canopy, fire suppression is best designed in at the same time. We coordinate both, so the canopy is built ready for the system.
- Wet chemical systems designed for commercial cooking
- Coverage of appliances, canopy plenum and duct entry
- Gas shut-off on discharge
- Installed and maintained by our specialist partner MKFS
Fire suppression FAQs
Do I need a fire suppression system on my kitchen canopy?
It is not required in every kitchen, but insurers, landlords and fire risk assessments increasingly call for it, particularly over fryers, chargrills and solid-fuel cooking. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has to make sure fire precautions are adequate.
Can fire suppression be fitted to an existing canopy?
Often, yes, depending on the canopy construction and access. New canopies are easier, because the pipework and nozzles can be designed in from the start.
Who installs and maintains the system?
Our partner Marlowe Kitchen Fire Suppression (MKFS) designs, installs and maintains the system. We coordinate it with the canopy and the rest of the ventilation.
